Parenting Around the Clock

You’re tired. Actually, you’re not just tired—you’re exhausted. Maybe even a little frazzled, too.

Just a little.

Your kids are home due to the mandated school closures, and now, you’re trying to figure out how to juggle your new normal.

The good news? You can feel more in control of your situation and take excellent care of your little one by taking care of yourself, too.

Here’s a rundown on seven self-care tips so that you can stay healthy and care for your little one this spring.

Let’s get started!

1. Exercise.

Going to the gym might not be possible right now, but you could still get in a nice workout at home.

For instance, you could do some pushups, leg lifts, squats, or planks. Just be sure to incorporate cardio into your workout regimen as well.

For instance, you and your little one can go for a 30-minute stroll around your neighborhood. A refreshing walk coupled with fresh air can do wonders for your body.

2. Eat healthy

Another way you can take excellent care of yourself while at home with your little one is to eat healthy.

Yes, chocolates and candy might sound more appetizing than carrots and celery. But instead of munching on those snacks—like cookies and chips—that provide little to no beneficial nutrients to your body why not try healthier alternatives such as nuts or grapes?

As a general rule of thumb, it is wise to eat between four and five servings of veggies and fruits each day. This can help you to both look and feel your best.

3. Get plenty of sleep.

Yes, this can be a tough one. But getting sleep is oh-so-important for taking care of both yourself and your child.

The majority of adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. Meanwhile, some are okay with only six hours, whereas others need 10 to function at their optimal levels.

Sleep is a vital part of staying healthy. So make it a priority for everyone in your house.

Not sure how much is ideal for you? Listening to your body is a good way to find out. If you’re tired, be sure to get more sleep.

4. Stay clear of tobacco and alcohol.

If you smoke cigarettes, it’s in your best interest to at least curb your smoking, if not quit smoking altogether. Eliminating smoking from your daily routine is the best move for your overall health.

Also, if you consume alcohol, try drinking in moderation. In other words, avoid drinking several drinks in a single day. However, note that drinking occasionally can actually benefit your health.

5. Refocus your mind.

Taking breaks from looking at social media and watching the news can be another great self-care move. Instead, take some deep breaths and try meditation.

Meditation is a body and mind practice that has historically been used to boost a person’s physical relaxation and calmness. Meditating can also improve your psychological balance and make it easier for you to cope with illness.

To perform meditation properly, you’ll need a quiet place to meditate. In addition, you’ll need to choose a comfortable posture, such as lying down or sitting.

Also, while you’re meditating, you’ll need to focus on a certain object or word. Finally, make sure that you keep your mind open.

Meditation has been proven to help with a number of health challenges, including insomnia, anxiety, and depression. It can also even help you to stop smoking, reduce your blood pressure, and help with irritable bowel syndrome.

6. Talk to other people.

If you and your little one are itching to connect with others outside of your home, make time to connect with other people via telephone or Skype.

Talking to others allows you to deal with life’s stress better. And it can simply make each day a little more enjoyable.

Of course, to experience true friendship, you need to embrace psychological intimacy. In other words, don’t be fearful of expressing your inner disappointments and fears with others. Just be yourself.

7. Do something you enjoy doing.

Making time to relax and unwind by engaging in your favorite activities can also put you in the best position to take for your little one.

For instance, do you like dancing? If so, why not throw yourself and your child an impromptu, high-energy dance party? Just play your top songs and start moving those feet around.

Don’t worry—we won’t look.

Or, if you’re into art, try crafting, crocheting, painting, or doodling. Creating something that is beautiful and unique can be an excellent way to relax both the body and the mind.

You could even create your own art journal. In this journal, you can simply combine your artwork, writing, and photos to convey your feelings and thoughts in any given moment.
